International
Global Change Institute (GCI)
The Global Change Institute (GCI) is an
independent source of game-changing
research, ideas and advice for addressing
the challenges of global change.
The GCI advances discovery and creates
solutions that meet the challenges
presented by climate change, technological
innovation and population change.
The Global Change Institute engages in:
– provision of expert-based solutions to
the challenges of global change
– transfer of research into knowledge
products that can inform technology and
management decisions within Australia
and internationally
– facilitating funding opportunities for
collaborative, solution-focused research
– high-level engagement and partnerships
in collaborative activities
– innovative approaches to understanding
the levers of change for the successful
uptake of knowledge.

Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB)
The Institute for Molecular Bioscience
(IMB) is internationally recognised as a
globally competitive centre for molecular
bioscience research.
Established in 2000 as UQ’s first research
institute, IMB is home to approximately 500
RESEARCH
INSTITUTES
UQ is an international leader in research
and teaching in a comprehensive range
of disciplines, including the biosciences,
nanotechnology, sustainable
development and social science.
In partnership with government, industry
and donors, UQ has developed eight
globally recognised Research Institutes,
many of which offer study opportunities
for students. By combining modern
infrastructure with a culture that champions
research excellence, UQ’s institutes have
attracted a community of more than 1500
scientists, social scientists, and engineers
from Australia and around the world.
Australian Institute for Bioengineering
and Nanotechnology (AIBN)
The AIBN conducts research to alleviate
problems in human health, energy,
manufacturing, and sustainability.
Harnessing the expertise of researchers
across a wide spectrum of engineering
and scientific disciplines, AIBN conducts
dynamic inter-disciplinary research
programs in cell and tissue engineering,
systems biotechnology, nanomaterials
and nanobiotechnology. The translation of
research into commercial outcomes is a
distinguishing feature of AIBN.
Research opportunities for students
include undergraduate Summer and
Winter Internships

Australian Institute for Bioengineering and
Nanotechnology (AIBN)
scientists, support staff and students from
more than 40 countries working to translate
research into benefits for the community.
IMB is a multidisciplinary research institute
committed to improving quality of life by
pursuing discoveries through fundamental
research, inventing biotechnologies and
advancing cures for disease.
IMB’s major research priorities are
personalised medicine, drug discovery, and
biotechnology, with a particular focus on
cancer, pain, infection and inflammation,
obesity and diabetes, childhood diseases,
clean energy, and agriculture.
IMB scientists are part of national
research programs and have ongoing
collaborations with groups around the
world. IMB not only contributes at the
international level, but is also a leader in the
advancement of this area of science.
IMB’s research outcomes are protected
and commercialised by the University-
owned technology transfer corporation
UniQuest Pty Ltd.
