In this course students with an interest in interior decoration and design can develop knowledge and
skills to work in the field of interior design. Technical, CAD and freehand drawing skills are taught
together with Product Knowledge, Oral Communications and Art History to prepare the students for
client presentation. Both domestic and commercial projects are covered in this two year full-time
course. Some excursions are included in the course.
Students may seek employment as interior design consultants operating either from specialised
retail outlets or individually; contract commercial specialists; employees of interior design
departments of domestic or commercial building companies; or assistants in architectural practices.

The Certificate III in Cabinet Making is a practical course providing comprehensive training for the
furnishing industry. The course is project-based and the student will do a range of skilled operations
within related activities involving trade routines, methods and procedures. Some judgement is
necessary in the selection of tools, equipment and services.
On satisfactory completion of this course students may apply for further studies in Furniture Design
and Technology.

Joinery

The Certificate III in Joinery provides practical training where the student learns all the skills in the
Joinery trade. The course teaches the student how to work safely; use all hand and power tools;
use machinery including computer controlled machinery; work on-site in the building industry; make
windows and doors; make cabinets; cut glass; weld metals and construct joinery and shop-fittings.
Joiners are employed in the building industry and in the cabinet, shop-fitting and stair-building
industries. The job prospects for a joiner in Australia are very good.
On satisfactory completion of this course students may apply for further studies in Furniture Design
and Technology.

The Certificate IV in Furniture Design and Technology teaches students to design, test and make
furniture. The course trains students in the use of basic and advanced production processes and
machinery including computer controlled equipment. Students learn how to analyse designs. They
learn how to solve problems and research furniture styles and new ideas to make original furniture
pieces. Design is taught at Holmesglen to teach students how to make professional presentations
and to document design ideas. Manual drawing skills and CAD drawing skills are taught as
basic skills along with knowledge of furniture design, ergonomics, materials and technology and
sustainable manufacturing. Students will have the opportunity to visit Holmesglen’s Rural Learning
Centre (RLC) to learn plantation forestry and sawmilling.
The course is designed for designers producing furniture for mass production. Students will work in
teams to make several new designs. A sample piece is produced and then the furniture is tested. A
final piece is then produced. Holmesglen has a relationship with the furniture industry and the retail
(furniture shop) sector. Furniture designed at Holmesglen is sold in Australian furniture stores.
The Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Furniture Design and Technology provide a broad range of
management and design skills. They teach the learner to analyse current practices, develop new
procedures and plan technical solutions for new manufacturing processes. On completion of the
Advanced Diploma students will be equipped with the skills to work in adesign, planning, engineering
or management capacity in all areas of the furnishing industry.
