These courses aim to provide English language skills to students from non-English speaking
backgrounds from beginner to advanced levels. The courses give practice in listening, speaking,
reading and writing as well as help with grammar and pronunciation. Holmesglen has an up-to-date,
communicative approach to English teaching. Our teachers are well qualified and use a wide range
of innovative and interactive teaching methods. A variety of written material, audio, visual and
computer activities support students in their learning
Business English options are available for those with an intermediate level of English and for those
who wish to proceed to a career or further studies in business.
English for Nurses option available to provide students with the skills and knowledge areas needed
to undertake further studies in Nursing or related fields.
Courses commence at approximately 6 weekly intervals throughout the year. Students completing
less than 20 weeks will receive a Record of Achievement. Students completing 20 weeks or more in
the same level will be eligible to receive an Award of Achievement.
Student teachers may occasionally be teaching in class under the supervision of an English
language teacher.

Study Skills

Holmesglen offers Study Skills courses at intermediate and advanced levels.
The intermediate level course combines a focus on English language skills with an introduction to
the skills required for further study in Australia.
The advanced level course provides students with the academic, language and study skills required
for TAFE and university level studies in Australia.
Student teachers may occasionally be teaching in class under the supervision of an English
language teacher.

This is an advanced level academic English course designed to provide students with the academic,
language and study skills required for vocational or higher education in Australia.
Student teachers may occasionally be teaching in class under the supervision of an English
language teacher.
Certificate IV in
ESL (Employment/
Professional)

These are advanced level English courses which focus on developing students’ English in a number
of different work environments. Students undertake a period of industry placement during the
course. Courses offered:
• English for Accountants
• English for Business Professionals
• English for Engineers
• English for Health Professionals
• English for Teachers
The English for Health Professionals course includes preparation for the Occupational English Test
(OET). The OET is used for registration in the health professions and is recognised by the Australian
government. There is no industry placement in this course.
