The Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) can be undertaken on completion of any of
the following courses:
• Certificate III in Bricklaying/Blocklaying
• Certificate III in Wall and Floor Tiling
• Certificate III in Wall and Ceiling Lining
• Certificate III in Solid Plastering
• Certificate III in Carpentry
• Certificate III in Glass and Glazing
• Certificate III in Painting and Decorating
• Certificate III in Stonemasonry (Monumental/Installation)
The Certificate IV provides an educational basis and practical training for a career within the building
and construction industry. Includes taking responsibility for part of the completion of the project,
including: supervision, scheduling, managing risk and quality assurance, administration and liaising
with the client.
On completion of the Certificate IV, students may apply for entry into the Diploma of Building and
Construction (Building).

This program provides students with the professional skills and knowledge for a career in Building
Design (Architectural) in residential, industrial and commercial buildings. Emphasis is on the design
process, presentation, construction technology, documentation, production of working drawings
utilising Building Information Modelling (BIM) to industry standards, including AutoCAD, ArchiCAD,
Revit and high end rendering software.
This course is supported by industry stakeholders including the Building Practitioners Board and
the Building Designers Association of Victoria. Graduates of this course will be able to progress
to managerial positions within a building or architectural drafting office after acquiring relevant
experience. Career opportunities exist within the building industry in areas such as building design
and planning or working drawings and documentation.
Students who successfully complete the Advanced Diploma of Building Design (Architectural) at
Holmesglen may be eligible to enter into one of the following Holmesglen degrees and to complete it
in a further two years:
• Bachelor of Building Surveying
• Bachelor of Construction Management and Economics
Alternatively, on successful completion of the Advanced Diploma of Building Design (Architectural) at
Holmesglen, students could apply for a credit pathway into Deakin University’s Bachelor of Design
(Architectural). Applications will be assessed on an individual basis.
Bricklaying
Certificate III

The Certificate III in Bricklaying/Blocklaying provides comprehensive training in all practical and
theoretical aspects of the bricklaying trade. Wherever possible, work is undertaken on fullsize
projects at Holmesglen in its specially designed facilities. This course equips students with the skills
of a bricklayer.
On satisfactory completion of this course students may enter the Certificate IV in Building and
Construction (Building) or the Diploma of Building and Construction (Building). The Certificate IV
course provides training for those wishing to undertake large scale and more complex projects and
the Diploma provides the skills and knowledge needed to plan and co-ordinate the construction of
low-rise residential and commercial buildings. For more information on these courses, please see
