Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is an academic
skills development activity developed
by UQ in 2008. Conducted annually,
3MT® challenges research students to
communicate the significance of their
research to a non-specialist audience in just
three minutes.
In 2013, more than 43 universities from
Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and
the South Pacific took part in this fun and
informative event. 3MT® highlights UQ’s

Research opportunities
UQ has 34 schools within the Faculties of:
– Business, Economics and Law
– Engineering, Architecture and Information
Technology
– Health and Behavioural Sciences
– Humanities and Social Sciences
– Medicine and Biomedical Sciences
– Science
and also has eight globally recognised
institutes (see pages 12-13) from which to
choose to focus your research.
Choosing your research topic
Choosing and refining your RHD project
is an exciting task that requires thought
and consideration. As an international
leader in research and teaching, UQ allows
you to choose from virtually any field –
from biosciences or nanotechnology to
sustainable development, social science or
the arts.
You can study in any of the schools and
centres within the faculties listed above,
or join the community of more than 1500
scientists, social scientists and engineers
working in the institutes created in
partnership with government, industry and
private donation.
Research commercialisation
UQ has more staff dedicated to research
commercialisation than any other Australian
university; ranks first for value of equity
holdings, invention disclosures and
active start-up companies; and has set
benchmarks for licence income and new
Australian patents.
When studying an RHD, you will have
access to Commercialisation Workshops
in conjunction with entities such as
UniQuest, IMBcom, JKTech and iLab. These
workshops are tailored specifically to those
interested in applying their innovations and
expertise in the community, and cover:
– the basics of commercialisation
– intellectual property protection with key
speakers from industry, the investment
community, UQ and UniQuest
– safeguarding research outcomes and
being published
– accessing research funding from industry
and government grants
– career options and alternatives.
Workshops can help you identify the
commercial potential of your ideas and
expertise, including consulting and research
contract work.

“My experience at UQ was so much
more than just doing a PhD. I worked at
UQ as a lecturer, clinical educator, tutor,
marker, research supervisor, and research
assistant. I travelled extensively and
presented my research at four different
international overseas conferences during
my candidature. I also spent six weeks
conducting research in Europe on a UQ
Graduate School travel grant.”
