SCHOLARSHIPS
UQ provides over AUD$39 million in
scholarship funding support each year for
the living and tuition expenses of research
higher degree candidates (RHD).
If you are a current or prospective RHD
student, you may be eligible for fnancial
support through a range of scholarships,
from living allowances and tuition fee costs,
to top-ups and travel awards. Scholarships
are awarded through merit-based criteria
to recognise excellence and reward
outstanding candidates.
When you apply for RHD admission and
want to be considered for a scholarship, you
simply need to state this on the
Application
for Admission and Scholarship
form
provided by the UQ Graduate School. Your
enrolling School or Institute plays a large
part in recommending you for scholarships.
UQ Graduate School scholarship
schemes for students are allocated in four
rounds each year – February, May, August,
and November.

International Postgraduate
Research Scholarships (IPRS)
Funded by the Australian Government, the
IPRS are awarded to outstanding international
RHD students to cover tuition fees and
Overseas Student Health Cover costs.
UQ Centennial Scholarships
(UQCent)
The UQ Centennial Scholarships are premier
UQ scholarships awarded to outstanding
candidates. The scholarship provides a
living allowance for students who have been
awarded an IPRS or other external tuition fee
scholarship.
UQ International Scholarships (UQI)
UQI scholarships support RHD candidates
who are strongly endorsed by their School
or Institute, but have not secured a UQ
Centennial or an International Postgraduate
Research Scholarship (IPRS). UQI
scholarships provide tuition fees and/or a
living allowance to commencing international
RHD students that is of equivalent value to
the Australian Postgraduate Award.
UQ Advantage (UQAdv)
Recognition of excellence is inherent in
UQ’s RHD scholarships. The UQ Advantage
“top-up” scholarships are merit-based
and provide an additional AUD$5000 living
allowance per year to RHD students holding
prestigious scholarships such as UQ
Centennial or the IPRS.
Graduate School International
Travel Award (GSITA)
Undertaking an RHD at UQ gives you
the option of receiving funding to travel
overseas to conduct research or scholarly
activity related to your research. GSITA
is awarded on a competitive basis to
confrmed candidates to enhance their
research experience at UQ. Travel purposes
can include accessing research materials
or facilities, or working in a research
environment not available in Australia. RHD
students may be eligible for up to AUD$5000
to cover overseas travel costs that are
relevant and academically justifable, but not
essential, to the completion of the thesis.
Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA)
The APA scholarship provides a living
allowance for high-quality research higher
degree students, and is based on academic
merit, research experience and/or potential,
and aligned with UQ’s research strengths.
English Language Scholarships (ELS)
UQ offers an English Language Scholarship
program exclusively for prospective
international students. This program assists
PhD and MPhil candidates who require
additional English language training to help
them meet the English language profciency
standard required for entry.
You will be considered for an ELS when
you apply for RHD at UQ. Your application
should include evidence of your most recent
IELTS test report, and a statement of how
your tuition fees are to be covered.

Network (JASON)

information on scholarships available to
postgraduate students wanting to study in

Australian Centre for International
Agricultural Research (ACIAR)
Fellowships
The primary aim of the ACIAR Fellowship
Scheme is to enhance research capacity
in ACIAR’s partner country institutions.
Students at UQ on an ACIAR fellowship
enjoy all the support services available to
ADS and ALA students.

Endeavour Awards
An Australian Government initiative, the
Endeavour Awards bring together all of the
Department of Industry, Innovation, Science,
Research and Tertiary Education (DIISRTE)
international scholarships so that high-achieving
students and scholars from around the world
can undertake study or research in Australia.
The awards provide fnancial support for up
to four years to undertake a postgraduate
qualifcation in any feld at Masters or PhD level
either by coursework or research.

Financial aid
UQ participates in and assists students to
apply for student loan programs offered
by their home countries to cover some
educational expenses while enrolled as
a full-time student in UQ programs. UQ
participates in a number of programs,
including the US Title IV Direct Loan
Programs, US Veterans Affairs Montgomery
GI Bill, US Sallie Mae and GEMS Private
Loans, Canadian Provincial and Federal
Loan programs, UK Career Development
Loan program, German Bafög, Norwegian
Lånekassen, Danish “SU” Education
Support Agency, and Swedish CSN Loans.

Program
