AUSTRALIAN
GOVERNMENT
SCHOLARSHIPS
(Australiaawards)
The Australian Government, through
the Australian Agency for International
Development (AusAID), provides
scholarships for people from developing
countries wishing to study at
postgraduate level in Australia.
The Australia Awards aim to promote
knowledge, education links and enduring
ties between Australia and our neighbours
through Australia’s extensive scholarship
programs. By enabling students to
gain tertiary qualifcations, Australian
Development Scholarships aim to equip
recipients with the skills and knowledge
they need to drive change and infuence
the development outcomes of their own
country. The Awards may include payment
of tuition fees, airfares, living allowance and
health cover for the student.
UQ is a participating institution and has
hosted Australian Government sponsored
students for more than 50 years.
The current major programs include:
Australian Development
Scholarships (ADS)
Australian Development Scholarships are
long-term development awards administered
by AusAID that aim to contribute to the
long-term development needs of Australia’s
partner countries in line with bilateral and
regional agreements. The study and research
opportunities provided by ADS develop the
skills and knowledge individuals need to
drive change and infuence the development
outcomes of their own country.
As well as administering the scholarships,
UQ offers extensive support to students
including:
– additional assistance from highly experienced
Student Contact Offcers
– a comprehensive fve-week Introductory
Academic Program (IAP) held prior to the
International Student Orientation
– Post IAP follow-on information sessions to
answer your questions after you get started
– additional supplementary support (if required)
to help students experiencing diffculties with
their study.
Australian Leadership Awards
(ALA)
Australian Leadership Awards are
supplementary to the ADS. Up to 200 of the
most outstanding Australian development
Scholarship recipients from across the globe
are offered an ALA. The leadership awards
are available at the postgraduate level only
and selection to an ALA is highly competitive.
ALAs are awarded to people who are already
leaders or have the potential to assume
leadership roles that can infuence social and
economic policy reform and development

Master of Counselling
“UQ is one of the top universities in
Australia and its high rank has made
it famous: the teaching methods are
amazing. UQ was the only university that
offered the course I needed to specialise
in community mental health.
“When AusAID came to Afghanistan and
offered me this opportunity, I was very
excited and honoured to be chosen: I
can work and learn in leading teaching
hospitals and mental institutions, which
gives me an insight into how Australia
deals with medical and mental issues
affecting patients.
“I am enjoying my course very much and
am learning from lecturers and doctors
who are leaders in their felds. I am like
a sponge – soaking up as much as I
can! After more than 40 years of war,
there are a lot of traumatised patients
in Afghanistan who need help – I am
always thinking about how I will use what
I am learning when I return home.”
