GURIONANG
(SINGAPORE)
Zoology student
“Zoology might be an unconventional
route to take for a Singaporean,
but the program at UQ successfully
amalgamates the fascinating world
of animals with their biomedical,
agricultural and conservation
applications to produce graduates
with a dimensionless range of career
and further study options. The best
thing about UQ has got to be the
fair advantage every student gets
to participate in the wide range of
activities on offer. I did a Summer
Research Program where I got to
work with moths and wasps (I love
insects!).”
FEATUREDCOURSES
Equine Behaviour and Performance
(Gatton campus)
ANIM2024
This course will give you a good
understanding of the principles of horse
behaviour and how these relate to the safe
handling and education of horses – from
weaning through to basic training for sale
and/or performance. You will learn to apply
basic learning theory to horses during
training, from birth to performance, with
particular emphasis on horse welfare and
occupational health and safety. Through
lectures and horse-handling practicals you
will be introduced to the biomechanics of
equine locomotion and its relationship to
training, exercise and performance.
Zoology
BIOL2204
This course covers animal diversity and
evolution, from primitive metazoans to
vertebrates. It describes the fantastic
diversity of animal and life histories in an
evolutionary context. You will also learn about
phylogenetics: the study of evolutionary
relationships among groups of organisms.
You will become familiar with body form and
function, and life history characteristics of the
major groups of animals.
Principles of Wildlife Management
ENVM3001
This course is an overview of the principles
and concepts that wildlife managers need
to be familiar with to master their craft. You
will learn biology and population dynamics
of Australian native and feral animals; the
ecological factors that affect the distribution
and abundance of wild vertebrates;
management of pests; management of
critically endangered species; and the
concept of adaptive management.
Food Process Engineering I
FOOD2003
This course will provide you with a sound
understanding of food engineering principles
and processes involved in the manufacture
of food products. You will learn about steam
generation and steam properties, gas
mixtures, viscosity and common methods
of measuring viscosity, visco-elasticity, heat
transfer, refrigeration, instrumentation and
basic process control. You will develop your
problem-solving and critical thinking skills
working through food engineering scenarios
encountered in industry.
Food Product Development
FOOD3011
Successful food product development
requires a knowledge of a range of disciplines
as well as a systematic approach to the
development process. Integration of
marketing and consumer aspects with the
technical aspects of food processing and
food products is very important. This course
covers the techniques involved in systematic
food product development.
Lifestyle Horticulture
(Gatton campus)
HORT3008
The course discusses the establishment
and maintenance of tree, turf, interior plants,
seasonal colour in the landscape, and the
emerging area of interest of green roofs. A
flexible program of study, you will have the
opportunity to experience tutorials and field
trips.
Lifestyle Horticulture
encompasses
urban forestry (arboriculture), turf, and
floriculture. These disciplines link to sciences
(plant physiology, ecology, soils and water)
as well as to aspects of landscape design
and management.
