Skills training
The UQ Graduate School provides you
with ongoing support through an annual
Skills Training program specifcally
designed for RHD students. Skills Training
includes a diverse range of presentations,
workshops, applied training activities, social
functions, and professional development
opportunities.
Graduate Student Week
The UQ Graduate School organises two
intensive Graduate Student Weeks each
year, which are an important feature of
UQ’s academic calendar. Sessions include
interactive presentations with guests from
industry, and a range of writing workshops
specifcally designed to support research
higher degree students at any stage of their
candidature.
Three Minute Thesis (3MT™)
Three Minute Thesis (3MT™) is an academic
skills development activity developed
by UQ in 2008. Conducted annually,
3MT™ challenges research students to
communicate the signifcance of their
research to a non-specialist audience in just
three minutes.
In 2012, more than 40 universities from
Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and
the South Pacifc took part in this fun and
informative event. 3MT™ highlights UQ’s
strong research culture and commitment to
skills development.

Choosing your research topic
Choosing and refning your RHD project
is an exciting task that requires thought
and consideration. As an international
leader in research and teaching, UQ allows
you to choose from virtually any feld –
from biosciences or nanotechnology to
sustainable development, social science or
the arts.
You can study in any of the Schools
and Centres within the faculties listed
above, or join the community of more
than 1500 scientists, social scientists and
engineers working in the Institutes created in
partnership with government, industry and
private donors.
Research commercialisation
UQ has more staff dedicated to research
commercialisation than any other Australian
university; ranks frst for value of equity
holdings, invention disclosures and

When studying an RHD, you will have
access to Commercialisation Workshops
in conjunction with entities such as
UniQuest, IMBcom, JKTech and iLab. These
workshops are tailored specifcally to those
