cent and an overall GPA (grade point
average) equivalent to 5.5 on a 7-point
UQ scale (see page 22)

Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
An MPhil is an internationally recognised
postgraduate research degree that involves
undertaking a signifcant research project.
The MPhil program provides students
with an opportunity to develop and
enhance analytical and research skills
through independent investigation in a
specifc feld. You must produce a thesis
that demonstrates your capacity for critical
analysis and application of specialist
knowledge.
Assessment
To be awarded this degree, you must
produce a thesis of no more than
40,000 words.
Duration
An MPhil generally takes one and half years
to complete full-time.
Entry requirements
The standard basis of admission is a UQ
bachelor degree with honours class IIB or
better. UQ may accept the following as the
equivalent:
– a bachelor degree with honours class IIB
or better from approved universities
– a bachelor degree plus at least one
year of full-time equivalent postgraduate
study that includes a signifcant research
component, or at least two years of
documented relevant experience.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

for most academic and research positions.
PhDs foster the development of
independent research skills, including the
capacity to formulate a signifcant problem,
to develop mastery of conceptual and
methodological skills, and to relate the
research topic to a broader framework of
knowledge in a relevant disciplinary area.
Assessment
To be awarded a PhD, you must produce a
thesis of no more than 80,000 words, with
your research representing a signifcant new
contribution to your discipline.

to complete full-time.
