Bachelor of
Dental Science
Focusing on the application of scientifc principles to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases and abnormalities,
the program will equip you with the knowledge and clinical skills required to become a competent dental practitioner. You will
take courses in oral biosciences and biomedical foundations in oral health. The remaining four years of the program involve
three years of applied dental science and one year of extramural clinical practice. Clinical work commences in second year and
is broadened in the third and fourth years of study. Each student is assigned patients and is then responsible for the dental
care of these patients. Clinical work in areas such as general practice dentistry, orthodontics, paediatric dentistry, periodontics
and prosthodontics is undertaken at the Dental School. You will gain experience in the areas of oral medicine and oral and
maxillofacial surgery in Brisbane teaching hospitals. The fnal year of study provides external clinical experience.

Sciences
The program focuses on developing a broad understanding of exercise and nutrition sciences, and will be particularly suited
to you if you intend to enrol in a postgraduate professional degree (e.g., dietetics, physiotherapy, clinical exercise physiology
or sports coaching) leading to a wide range of clinical and non-clinical careers. You will examine how exercise and nutrition
play a role in community health and the prevention and treatment of illnesses and diseases, and will take courses in human
movement sciences (e.g., exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor control), nutrition sciences (e.g., metabolism, food science),
preventative health (e.g., community and public health nutrition, physical activity and health) and applied sciences
(e.g., biophysics, chemistry, anatomy).

The program explores the complex nature of human movement including how the human body reacts to ftness and exercise
regimens, performs at all levels of sport participation, engages in recreational activities, as well as other acute and chronic
physical activity pursuits. You will study a diverse range of courses including anatomy, biomechanics, motor control, exercise
physiology, exercise and sport psychology, physical activity and health, sports medicine and exercise prescription. After
completing Year 1 you may be eligible to enter the Clinical Exercise Physiology major.
