If you would like to add another skill
to your portfolio, why not learn a new
language?
The Institute of Modern Languages
(IML), a centre within the Faculty of
Arts at UQ St Lucia, offers courses
in more than 25 languages, from
Arabic to Vietnamese, at beginner to
advanced levels, and you are most
welcome to enrol while studying at UQ.
IML’s fexible time schedule and
well-qualifed tutors ensure that you
not only gain valuable language skills
but also receive an exciting cultural
experience.
IML language courses cover all four
communication skill areas – listening,
speaking, reading and writing – in
small, friendly classes. You do not
need any formal entry requirements
for IML courses and they are not
accredited to UQ programs.
Translation, interpreting,
and cross-cultural briefngs on
Australian culture and language
are also available on a fee-for-
service basis.

– UQABROAD
Once enrolled at UQ, you can have
the exciting experience of studying
on exchange overseas for one to two
semesters, while still gaining credit
toward your UQ degree.
UQ Abroad is an ideal way to
combine study and travel. Discover
a new culture frst-hand and improve
your foreign language skills as you
broaden your career and academic
opportunities, establish a worldwide
network of friends, and gain a different
perspective on your studies.
Postgraduate students who have
successfully completed at least one
standard full-time semester (#8 units) of
study on a UQ campus in their current
UQ Coursework Masters program may
apply.
UQ has many exchange agreements
with other institutions, and so you
will have the choice of more than 175
universities in 38 countries (see page
86).
Under the exchange, tuition fees
at the host university are waived. You
continue to be enrolled and pay fees at
UQ and are responsible for your
own airfares, accommodation,
personal insurance, and living costs.
You can even apply for a UQ
scholarship (available to both
international and Australian students
going on exchange)
to help with costs.
