INSTITUTES
UQ is an international leader in research

and donors, UQ has developed eight
globally recognised Research Institutes,
many of which offer study opportunities
for students. By combining modern

Australian Institute for
Bioengineering and
Nanotechnology (AIBN)
The AIBN focuses its research in areas
that will alleviate current problems in
human health, manufacturing, energy
storage, information technology and the
environment.
By merging the skills of more than 360
engineers, chemists, biologists and
computational scientists, AIBN conducts
world-class research programs in nano-scale
science, technology and engineering, and
translates this into commercial outcomes.
Research
AIBN has research programs in the areas of:
– delivering therapeutic agents using
polymer chemistry to improve effcacy;
using virus-like particles to develop new
vaccine technologies that change the
way we combat infectious diseases,
including infuenza and arthritis;
and using needle-free
transdermal technologies to vaccinate
against and treat major diseases such as
malaria and infuenza
– using metabolic engineering of cells to
produce new drugs
– combining stem cell biology with novel
scaffolds for regenerative medicine
– developing nanomaterials for orthopaedic
applications, enzyme encapsulation and
biosensors
– using biosensors to develop early
detection, monitoring and treatment
systems for cancer
– working on polymer nanocomposites
to form a next-generation insulation for
Cochlear implants
– putting a focus on improvements in
energy and the environment through
high performance hydrogen storage
materials, photocatalysis for environment
remediation and novel membranes for
water desalination and recycling.
Research training
AIBN is dedicated to providing unparalleled
training opportunities for research higher
degree students. With collaborative links
to laboratories all over the world, AIBN
provides extensive opportunities, including
fnancial support (such as living allowance,
top-up scholarships and conference
attendance) to enrich the training process
and postdoctoral employment opportunities.

The Global Change Institute (GCI)
is an independent source of game-
changing research, ideas, and advice
for addressing the challenges of global
change.
The GCI advances discovery and creates
solutions that meet the challenges
presented by climate change, technological
innovation, and population change.
The Global Change Institute engages in:
– provision of expert-based solutions to the
challenges of global change
– transfer of research into knowledge
products that can inform technology and
management decisions within Australia
and internationally
– facilitating funding opportunities for
collaborative solution-focused research
– high-level engagement and partnerships
in collaborative activities
