Living in Sydney
Sydney is Australia’s largest and most
dynamic city. It is an exciting and ever-
changing urban centre and was ranked
6th in the ‘QS Best Student Cities in
the World 2012’. Sydney is vibrant
and cosmopolitan with a diverse and
unique lifestyle. Importantly, Sydney is
considered to be safe, clean and green.
Australia’s Cultural Gateway
Located on the south-east coast of Australia, Sydney is the
gateway to Australia and home to over four million people.
Sydney is also one of the world’s most multicultural cities, where
you can experience the food, entertainment and customs of
the world. It is the major point of entry for international airlines
operating in Australia and offers more entertainment, shopping
and sightseeing than any other Australian city.
Major Events, Markets and Shopping
Sydney hosts many major cultural and sporting events,
thousands of eateries and restaurants from many different
cultures, excellent shopping options and an exciting and
diverse nightlife. Lively weekend markets are a feature of areas
such as the famous Rocks district, Paddington, Balmain and
Chinatown. They provide a cheaper shopping alternative to the
wide range of department stores and designer outlets.
Friendly People
Australian people are typically friendly and easy to get along
with. They come from culturally diverse backgrounds.
Australians are very accepting of the cultures of others.
Indeed, Australians celebrate their differences and enjoy
learning about the cultures, religions and customs of visitors
and their fellow Australians. Currently over 50 per cent of
Sydney residents were either born outside Australia or have
at least one parent born overseas.
A Mild Climate
There are four seasons in Sydney. Summer is from
December to February, autumn from March to May, winter
from June to august, and spring from September to
November. January and February are the hottest months in
Sydney. Average temperatures in summer range from 17 to
26 degrees and in winter, from 8 to 16 degrees. Sydney’s
winters are generally mild. There is no wet season and
rainfall in Sydney is usually spread evenly through the year.
A Healthy Lifestyle
Sydney’s warm and sunny climate is perfect for a healthy
outdoor lifestyle. People enjoy a range of activities including
cycling, swimming and surfng. The city centre is beside
Sydney Harbour and features landmarks such as the
Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Royal Botanic Gardens and the
world famous Sydney Opera House. The city is surrounded
by beautiful sandy beaches, national parks and mountain
ranges suitable for bushwalking, hiking and camping all
year round.
