A choice of academic programs
and streams of study is available in
UNSW Foundation Studies, depending
on your background and intended
university degree.
The UNSW Foundation Studies is appropriate for:
• international students
• Australian citizens and permanent residents of Australia
with an international educational background*
You must have reached the minimum age of 16 years
at commencement, as well as fulfl certain academic
and English language requirements.
Selecting Your Study Stream
and Undergraduate Program
On the application form you need to nominate, in order of
preference, up to two undergraduate programs that you
would like to study (see pages 26–29 for the list of UNSW
undergraduate programs). You will then be enrolled in the
UNSW Foundation Studies stream that provides the best
preparation for your nominated program.
Standard Program – 9 months
To enter our Standard Program, students should have
completed 11 or 12 years of schooling with good grades and
a strong English language profciency. An English language
profciency of IELTS 5.5 with minimum 5.0 in all individual skills
(or equivalent) is required.

UNSW Foundation Studies Programs
Standard Plus Program – 12 months
Our Standard Plus Program is an extended foundation program
for students who do not quite meet the entry requirements
for the Standard Program, or who may need a slightly longer
academic program with a slower pace of tuition. Students
should have completed 11 years of schooling or equivalent.
For example; Year 11 in Australia, Form 5 in Hong Kong,
Senior Middle 2 in China, SMU 2 in Indonesia or Year 1 of the
International Baccalaureate Diploma. An English language
profciency of IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent) is required to enter
the Standard Plus Program.
Transition Program – 4 months
To enter the Transition Program, students should normally
have completed a matriculation program or a senior high
school qualifcation, for example, A-Levels, HKDSE,
Gaokao or the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program.
The Transition Program offers Physical Science, Life Science
and Commerce/Business Streams only. An IELTS of 6.0
(or equivalent) is required.
English Plus Program
Students whose English language score is IELTS 5.0 or
equivalent are invited to apply for our English Plus Program that
comprises both the UNSW Institute of Languages 10 week Pre-
Foundation English course and a Foundation Studies program.
English Plus and a UNSW Foundation Studies program can be
packaged with your UNSW undergraduate degree program on
a single visa.
